HIsmelt was originally developed by Rio Tinto over many years in Western Australia, and is now owned by Shandong Molong Petroleum Machinery Company in China where it operates the first successful commercial production plant.

Smelt Tech is charged with the commercialisation of the technology outside of China, and engages with Dinsdale in the joint development of business opportunities for HIsmelt outside of China on a case by case basis.
HIsmelt offers a route to the low-cost, environmentally friendly production of high-quality Pig Iron , with significant technical and commercial advantages over the conventional blast furnace route to steel making.
